Okechukwu “Okey” Ogunjiofor, popularly known as “Paulo,” is an acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker, writer, producer, and actor whose pioneering contributions laid the foundation for what is now known as Nollywood, one of the world’s largest film industries. As the Managing Director of Videosonic Studios Group since 1993, he has remained a visionary force dedicated to advancing African storytelling through film.

Widely regarded as the founding pioneer of modern Nollywood, Ogunjiofor co-wrote and produced the groundbreaking 1992 film Living in Bondage—the movie that revolutionized Nigeria’s film industry by popularizing the direct-to-video distribution model. Beyond producing the landmark film, he also portrayed the memorable character “Paulo,” whose role became one of the most iconic performances in early Nollywood history.

Building on the success of Living in Bondage, Ogunjiofor produced several classic Nigerian films throughout the 1990s, including Circle of Doom (1993), Nneka the Pretty Serpent (1994), Brotherhood of Darkness (1995), and When Flowers Turn Black (1997). These productions helped shape the early identity of Nollywood and cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s most influential creative minds.

Despite playing a central role in establishing a multi-billion-dollar industry, Ogunjiofor stepped away from active filmmaking for nearly twenty-five years. He attributed this hiatus to significant contractual challenges with early investors, coupled with the absence of structured distribution networks, copyright protection, and archival systems within the emerging industry.

In 2021, he made a remarkable return with Amina, a high-budget historical action drama that premiered globally on Netflix. The film, based on the legendary 16th-century warrior Queen Amina of Zazzau, was the result of more than two decades of meticulous research and development. Directed by Izu Ojukwu and produced under the Videosonic Studios Group banner, Amina received widespread acclaim and earned multiple Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), particularly for its outstanding costume and production design.

Today, Okey Ogunjiofor continues to shape the future of African cinema by championing what he describes as the “Fourth Epoch of Nollywood.” Through mentorship, industry leadership, and his professional engagements, he is committed to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers while promoting globally competitive, authentically African stories that resonate with audiences around the world.
